In rear of Vicksburg Aug 2nd 1863
Dear Mother
I now seat my self to write a fiew lines to you to let you know how I get along I was verry sick yesterday with the dum ague it is not time yet for me to have it yet today thare were two men in my company got furloughs last week in 15 days after they started there will be three more we draw lots to see who will get them I may get one next time and may not if I should I would not have money enough to take me home haveing that stole from me did not suit me much I do not feel like writing much this morning I am verry weak the change of climate is what gave me the ague pleas write / when you get this I am in hopes that I will get a furlough thare is a new call for old Regt to reinlist and all others for three years I think if I get out of this all safe it will be enough for me I will not write aney more from your son
