In rear of Vicksburg July 28/63
 
Dear Mother
 
                        I now seat my self to answer your letter which I received last night I received one when I was in Jackson I am now with my Regt and am well and so is all the rest of the boys I left my violin in Memphis I will have it sent to you before long I had twenty three dollars stolen from me and it took all I had but we expect to get paid again soon and then I will get some more to loose I will send home all I can thare is some talk of our going to / Nachees I had as live go as not and may be we will stay here all summer I want you to send me a paper once in a while a paper here costs 25 cents I do not like to pay that much for one I have sent home more money than aney other Deer Park boy and Fred Smith draws pretty near as much again as I do and he has not sent but a little over one hundred I have a poor place to write and I will not write much more this time
