Dear Col.
I now take this opportunity to write you a few lines on a matter of some importance me. you perhaps know that I was taken prisoner at Mission ridge on the 22nd of Sept last and taken to Richmond where I remained till the 27th of Oct last when they paroled me and I was taken to Anapolis Md, from there I was transferred to Camp Dennison Ohio. I remained there till the 26th inst. when they started me with a lot of others for this regt. I am doing / well now though am not very strong yet, not having got over the effects of the fever yet. I did not like the notion of coming till I had been exchanged so I came home. do you blame me. I think you will not. I saw Capt Pollock to day and he said it would be all right. the prisoners from Camp Chase are coming home all the time and nothing is done to them. I do not wish to do anything to injure my name of the good cause I am engaged in, and as for a deserter I despise one. I think I will hardly one what do you think. when I come to the regt I want to do my duty as I did before I was captured. as soon as / I get a little stronger and am exchanged I am willing and anxious to come to you. when you know of my being exchanged or you want me let me know and I am thar or will be shortly. I hope you will not think I wish to shirk my duty, no never. I always performed it till the rebs interfered and am willing to do it yet. by writing and letting me know when I am exchanged and wanted you will oblige one of your soldier boys.
