Dear Brother
A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you and many very many of them is the wish of your Father Mother and Sisters. this day one short year ago I should have said brothers but now I have none but you left. God grant you may be spared us. our family is very small to day. there are only Father Mother Mary Janey and I. our family are scattered far and wide our dear sister lies buried in Norristown one brother is laid in a Southern grave, and another God only knows where or whether he is even laid under the ground, while you are every moment in danger of loosing you life and sister Maggie is at housekeeping in the city better she had died than ever been married to such a man where what few there is / left of us will be next year God alone can tell I hope we may all be spared to spend our next Christmas together but Gods will be done. he doeth all things for the best. Father has been home all day spending his Christmas with us but oh what a sad day it has been to us. last year year brother Robert was home full of life and hope to day we look for him in vain. some times it seems more than we can bear. I hope and pray that God may see fit to spare us to live a long and happy life. we are all in good health and I hope this may find you the same. I have not yet told you that we have moved to Newport opposite the Highams I do not know whether you remember where Mrs Band and were when you first came here. we are living next door to where she lived. it is a two story frame three rooms on the first floor and two on the second we pay $8 per month / we have a good cistern but the yard is rather small. I forgot to tell you that William Higham has come home. he came home yesterday. his sister Jane has taken his child to raise as her own. Mother told him that she would not keep her any longer so he has given her to his sister so Janey is the baby once more Dear Brother excuse this short letter Mother seems more cheerful since we came over here but she is very low spirited to night once more I wish you a merry christmas and Happy New Year all join me in love to you good bye and God grant you may not be called on to participate in any more battles
