Head Qurs. 2d Brig. 1st Div. 4th A.C.
Huntsville Ala. Feb. 7th 1865
Lt. Col. Smith,
Dear Friend
I had just finished writing to my wife, and several other acquaintances, when my thots. reverted to incidents in the past, and became associated with yourself. It is singular, I must confess, for I have a strange sensitiveness about letting my mind wonder outside of its proper spheres.—I mean those of a Private's.
You must excuse me, I was thinking of Boards of Claims and Courts Martial. These suggested your name. Then another idea followed which I confess prompts as much as anything else the writing of these lines—viz. whether, (as I am only used as Clerk and counted not fit for anything else) it would not be better to seek a detail where I would find more to do. I would like to get to Dept Hd. Qurs. If you have any acquaintance in any of the Depts please have me detailed. If this imperfect specimen of my hand will be a recommendation / you are at liberty to use it
We are pleasantly situated at present and appreciate the opportunity for a rest. There exists the usual dry monotony of life in camp.
Maj. Hicks of your Reg. as you no doubt are aware, is "Judge Advocate" in the Div. Court Martial now in session at Huntsville.
I am Very Respectfully
Your Obt. Servt
