Mr. Jno. C. Schelly:
Dear father:
As I did not hear anything from you for rather a long time I thought it best to drop a few lines to you to let you know as to my whereabouts. Our regiment has been moved to almost washington and it is often that we hear the cannons boom. Our boys in the regiment are generally all well and greedy for a brush with the rebels. It is reported that we are to be moved from here to missouri to be under the command of Genl Fremont / but I hear nothing positive about it yet as there are so many false reports going the rounds. We are armed with the Minie Rifle one of the best weapons in in use they will carry a ball 900 yards or a little better than a half a mile. and they We have great praise from our brigade General and Col. Biddle for Col. Biddle says he is confident in the Bucktails (as we are called) courage. and I am confident that before 1 month we will have the chance to be targets for the Seseshers if our wild-cats will allow it but I think the seseshers will find a pretty good match if ever they meet the wild cats.
I have nothing further to state except that I am well and hope to be the same write as soon as possible you get this letter My best respects to you all No more at present
Yours for ever
Jos. Schelly
