Camp Pierrepont Feb 23/62
Dear Father, Sisters, and Brother:
Yours of the 18th Inst. came to hand night before last but as I was on guard then I could not very well answer it write away and yesterday was Washington's birth-day a day of great jubilee throughout the world as well as in the united states, but I had to sleep the greatest portion of the day because I did not sleep much the night previous, besides I did not feel very well because I had such an awfull cough, cold and hoarse throat. That poetry I had enclosed to you was no hymn as you called it but it was a war song of the Penna Reserve volunteer corps. I have a good song now called / "We're marching down to Dixie's Land" and I would send you that too but then I cannot learn it myself but when I will come home home I will sing it to you. I think that the soldiers will come home home in about 6 month's when the war will all be over. I often thought of writing to uncle Charles and Aunt Sally but I did not think it practicable to do so, but I return compliments to them if you see them give them my best wishes. I very well know you did not see president Lincoln's picture in wash Philadelphia but you seen washington, Hancock, Jefferson, Webster, Franklin Lafayette, Jackson, Henry Clay and all the rest of the great statesmen and warriors
Please ask Christ. F. whether he is still as hard a seccessionist as he was when he was loading those oats in the field last summer and tell him that the rebel cause is at a stand and that secession stock is running low at home and abroad. and tell him such secessionist like him would better be quiet for there would be plenty of ropes yet after Jeff Davies and his gang of ruffians would be hung. I have seen Jacob Crater and Milton Sheetz, and Rhineman and his boys as well as several other from Buck Co. &c but I did not see George Crater yet because he is of about nine miles from here in Maryland.
My best wishes to you all
Write soon and adress
Yours for ever
