Joseph Shelly to John C. Shelly et al., 6 March 1862
Camp Pierrepont March 6th 1862

Dear Father, Brother and Sister:
Your letter of the 3rd Inst. came to hand last night and with much letter and due regards it was perused. I noticed what I expected long ago that you would have vended and sell out althoug it is to my opinion that there will be no very good market unless that farming utensils are in market on account of the war as farming is the medium for war / It might be that farming implements are in good call as nine-tenth of the war or subsistence of the war must look to the maintenance of the farmer because if all able-bodyed men would go to the war there would not be enough left at home to cultivate and raise grain for the maintenance of the war. Horses one would think ware in call but in fact there is not a very large amount paid for horses. The contractors get for the Government horses only from $110 to $120 & $125

News I cannot give you any of importance or interest but we soon expect to be on the march to make a strike on the rebels somewhere, and if God wills we will be as succesfull as our gallant army in the west for you of course must have heard of them taking to forts one on the Tennessee and the other on the Cumberland river just at the line between Kentucky and Tennessee in which to engagements about 15 000 prisoners were taken as well as making the rebels feel danger / I am confident that the war will be over by about July or August next unless our army or navy should meet with some very frightful disasters. but our motto is "Justice and right" as well as Trust in God and Keep your powder dry" My best wishes to you all. I am well and hope you all to be the same.
