Joseph Shelly to John C. Shelly, 15 May 1862
Camp Washington near Falmouth
Stafford Co. Va. May 15th 1862

Dear Father:
To-day I received a letter from brother John enclosing 12. skeins of thread a big paper of needles and 50-5ct postage stamps and for which I return my sincere and heartfelt thanks

Another mishap has befell me since I had send that last letter to you. Last night I he received a letter from a man where I had send $15.00 and they of course went the same way as did the first $5.00 that I had send to you which makes now $20.00. but "Thats the way the money goes". I had send them the same day that I had send the first $15.00 to you and since which time a few days afterward I send him another letter but the $15.00 never came to where I wanted them. and I think I never shall send another dollar to no man any more and leave leave / the rest of my debts go to hell but keep the money in my pocket and spend it, and then I am sure I have something for my money. This was the first money I lost though since I am in the service and I think it is the last too.

News I have not much now of any thing.

My best wishes to you all

I am well hope you to be the same also. Please write soon.
