Miss Mary J. Smith
Dear Mary Jane.
We have just received your letter. Perhaps you think we neglect & forget you, not so dear friend. could I ever forget one so a sister of my "Dear Sue"? The letter was misplaced in the mail and not by us. I was exceedingly sorry to hear of "dear Sue's" death. She was a good girl, and all the scholars loved her dearly. She was always gentle and kind to all, therefore we will never forget her. No news, I am not going to school as yet, but I expect to go somewhere soon. Father talks of sending Gus & I off to Columbia soon, but it is doubtful whether we will go or not. Rose Bass is going too if we go. I have received a letter from Almisa, she is well, and wants to see me very much, she sayed. I have not received but one letter from Kate yet. Have you seen Rod lately? How does he look? I suppose as old as ever. Mary Jane you must write to me often and let us get better acquainted with / each other. I would like to hear from Kate too if she would write. Give my love to her and tell her to write to me in your next. Tell her don't disappoint me for I shall certainly expect one from her and you must answer this immediately
Yours &c &c
