Acquia Creek, Va. Jan. 31st 63.
My Dear Grandpa.
I have just seized upon a quiet Saturday evening to drop you a few lines and if I recollect right the anniversary of your birth day occurs about this time.
Allow me to congratulate you upon reaching to such an advanced age and being surrounded by so many blessings which a kind and merciful Father has given you.
Our Brigade is stationed at Acquia Creek about ¾ of a mile from the landing and details are made / daily to load trains of cars with subsistence &c. to feed the Army which is now laying opposite Fredericksburg.
Our Regiment is reduced considerably there only being about 300 reported for duty. we have been through several battles and it has been said that there is no single body of troops in the country that has done more marching than "Stonewall's Rebel Brigade" and "Banks old Corps" in which we are.
We have been having a slight fall of snow within a few days past which has no ways / improved the roads though the warm sun of today has dryed up the mud considerably.
Excuse the haste in which this letter is written but rest assured I think of you often. Give my love to Grandma and Aunt Julia & Lydia & Louisa. I am as ever your affec. Grandson.
