Vermillion Bayou La.
November 15th. 63.
My Dear Grandpa.
Our Corps d' Armie (the 19th) is still stationed at this Bayou in camp. we expect to march back to New Iberia in a few days, this is indicated by our Corps ammunition train of some 75 wagons being sent to the rear this morning, also all of the beef on the hoof numbering some where in the neighborhood of 1000 head.
8 P.M. We have just recd orders to march at an early hour / tomorrow morning and the men will have to cook one days ration this evening for the march.
Our Brigade supported a reconnaissance made by Genl Lee last Thursday and in a severe artillery fight which lasted 15 minutes, we lost 2 killed & 5 wounded, and one man who pretty badly frightened by a piece of a shell passing through his hat just grazing the top of his head but not injuring him.
I am enjoying excellent health, thanks to a kind Providence & hope to survive all the dangers incident to a soldier's life.
Please give my love to Grandma & Aunts J & L and all on the Hill & believe me
Same as Ever most affec your Grandson
—William—
