My Dear Grandpa,
I was, as I am always, delighted to hear from you, and hasten to indite a few words in answere to your kind letter which I received this morning. We shall soon start on our march towards Alexandria La where the Rebels are said to be strongly fortified. Two of the new Regiments which / have recently arrived here from the North, the 29th and 30th Maine Vols, are, or rather have been, suffering from small pox, as many as 13 died one day it is said, my Regiment has not lost a man. I often think of you and Grandma, and nothing would please me / more, than to drop in one of these fine mornings and have an old fashioned chat together, and listen to one of your interesting stories which used to delight me so much when I was quite young. My dear Grandpa, write me whenever you have a spare moment, for I assure you I prize letters from such / a chewrished and valued friend as yourself. Love to Grandma and all on the Hill. Believe me I am as ever your most affec. Grandson,

William
