Andrew T. Goodman to Adelaide B. Goodman, 30 March 1863
Camp near White Oak Church Va.
March 30 1863.
My dear Wife.
Lieut. Weidy's furlough has just come over from Head Quarters approved and as he will stop at Vine St. I thought I must write you a few lines, though I do not think you deserve them, for I have not recd a word from you since Lee's return. Mr. Allman, who returns home in the morning, is with us. He was the only one of the Committee who got through. The parcels he brought are now at the landing and will be distributed to-morrow. There is a barrel there marked for me, but I do not know what is in it. The weather now seems to be settled. The roads are getting good and all anticipate a speedy move, but we have as yet no orders. There seems to be some ground for believing that this Corps will not move with the Army, but will remain here to guard the Acquia and Falmouth R.R. I do not place much faith in these reports. I trust Amy and Roly are better, completely over their colds. I would much regret were you to have them sick on your hands so frequently. I have no news or gossip worth relating. Matters remain as when I last wrote, the men happy and in good condition, the Officers well and hearty. I will write you again tomorrow evening, when I have investigated the contents of my barrel. Give my love to all and kiss little ones over & over for me and do not forget my photographs. I must have them. Remember me to all inquiring friends Express our great regrets to Cap Loudy that he was unable to come down. we were anticipating great times with him and are extremely sorry that he cannot visit us. The Paymaster has not yet come. It is too bad, and we feel it sorely, but I must close as Mr. Allman wants to go to bed. Hoping to hear from you soon I remain as ever
Yours devotedly
Andy
