Andrew T. Goodman to Adelaide B. Goodman, 20 June 1863
Kirkwoods      June 20 1863.

My dear Dot.
I have concluded to go to the Regiment and start to-morrow morning at 9 o'clock. Our Corps is lying near Leesburg, and the canal boats on which they are forwarding the soldiers run within 2 or 3 miles of that place, so I will have no difficulty in reaching it. The only objection is the tedious way of traveling, being some 45 miles. I could have been appointed here temporarily on Court Martial, but the principal objection to me is the expense of remaining here. It would cost me 10 or 12 per week at the least, at any boarding house I would be willing to go to. Prices are scandalous. There is not much danger of being gobbled on the canal / Transportation by the Rail Road is not given, as the locality of the Rebs is so uncertain. From what I can learn, an engagement between Hooker's forces and the Rebs, is expected to-morrow (Sunday).

Some 3 or 4 Officers now at the Hotel go with me on the same boat so I shall not lack company.

I will have to wait now for my pay until the Paymaster comes to the Regiment, as he will not be back in time for me to see him.

My leg does not trouble me, and Dr Allen thinks I need not fear any further inconvenience unless the wound should chafe. If so I must lie over until it heals again.

Give my love to all the folks. Kiss little ones over and over for me and believe me to remain as ever

Yours devotedly
Andy—

P.S. I will write so soon as I can meet with any Post Office.
