Andrew T. Goodman to Henry B. Blanchard and Adelaide B. Goodman, 23 June 1863
Kirkwoods      June 23—63.

My dear Henry—
I will try and distribute letters around among you promiscuously while on my winding way. Do not open your eyes too wide when you see the present location of "a wandering Sojer boy" on his way to his Regiment. When I last wrote Addy, you will remember I was to start for Edwards Ferry. Well I did go there, on a canal boat to. A nasty dirty coal boat with a propelling power of 2 miles an hour. The ride through was not unpleasant, for the "Chesapeake and Ohio Canal" hugging the Potomac closely all the way is certainly a beautiful and romantic stream, particularly at Great Falls, where the scenery there is magnificent. Well we reached Edwards Ferry, got off and found our forces had thrown a pontoon bridge laid over the river. Went to Leesburg some 3 or 4 miles off and inquired high and low for the 6th Corps, but could get no information whatever about it. Having no tents, and being unable to procure any room or board anywhere, we concluded (4 of us) to return here and report for further orders. So here we are and leave this afternoon for Alexandria where we take the Orange Rail Road and get out at Fairfax Station. They say the 6th Corps is some where / around there, but I am not very sanguine about it and fear a long march. I am almost sorry that I left home now, as I would have been as far on my way if I had left Phila. last night. But I did for the best, and I made a big try to do something. My leg is holding out first rate. As for my baggage I suppose I shall eventually lose it, for I will not trouble myself with it very far I can assure you. It is very hot and dusty. I will however have 2 pleasant companions, Captains of the 10th Massachusetts, returning from leave of absence from wounds received in the same battle as myself. Remember me to all inquiring friends &c. &c. and believe me to be as ever

Truly Yours
Andy—

Dear Addy—
You will see by above how I am getting along. Direct letters as usual—119th P.V. 1st Division 3 Brigade 6th Corps. I will write you again as soon as I reach the Regiment. Give love to all and kisses to little ones & believe me to remain as ever

Yours devotedly
Andy
