Rifle pits at Rappahannock Station
Sunday Novem 8 63
My dear Henry—
I write a few hurried lines to let you know I am safely through the terrible fight, not knowing if Addy is at home yet. Our Brigade has been hardly used. Our loss not yet known. Our Regiment and the 49 Penna have not suffered so severely as the 6th Maine & 5 Wisconsin. We were held as reserve and were brought up just at dusk. We carried everything before us, forts rifle pits—7 pieces Artillery 5 stand of colors large number of arms &c. I am in charge of the burying squad of the 6th Maine. But I must hurry through, the 1st Brigade is crossing the river and we will doubtless have sharp work. Give my love to all. Kiss little ones & believe me to be
Truly yours
Andy
