Camp near Hazel River

My dear Dot
One long week and no letter from you; what is the reason? I have been confined to my tent for the past two days with "smoke blindness", a disease, if it can be so called, incidental to camp life. I am much better, but my eyes continue to pain me, and I cannot write you a long letter. We are lying here recuperating for the passage of the Rapidan, which I suppose we will try in a few days. Our reputation as a Regiment is now made judging from various congratulatory orders. By enclosed $100 you will know that Paymaster has been here. You shall have more in January. Give my love to all the folks and respects to all inquiring friends. Kiss little ones over and over again for me and excuse this scrawl for I can do no better. Will write again in few days.
Believe me as ever yours devotedly

Andy.
