Portsmouth Va January the 4th 1862
           
Dear Mother
                        With very much pleasure I received your kind letter last night and was glad to hear that you are well as usal I am also the same. I was sorry to hear that Aunt Betsy met with such bad luck on Christmass day I have not received that turkey yet I am afraid it will spoil before it gets here I got a letter from Will yesterday he is well. I am glad to hear that you are haveing such nice weather I am glad that old rose made such good beef. how does father get along this winter We have had inspection to day I dont know how soon we will leave here Well Mother we have the same old rations yet. We have not got our pay yet the captain says he thinks we will get our pay next week is there many prairie chickens this winter When you get my pay you must get Martha a new suit of clothes clear through I hope I can get home by next fourth of july if I dont get my discharge by that time I shall get a furlough and come home I should think that old gibs would send lew some thing. I am thank full that I have got such a kind Mother and father and sisters and brothers. does old Hayes keep the post office yet /

have you heard from uncle fred lately tell may that when she gets time I want her to answer my letter Mother I cant think of any thing more to write this time I will write the rest to mary So good bye for this time

            With very much pleasure I take my pen in hand to answer your letter Well Mary you said that Eunice said that I was garding Well that is not so, you will have a chance to call her sister yet ha ha Mary haint that so now see here I am away off down here and you must wait upon that gal for me Wont you and make the bargain does she know how her name passess from you to me Well mary you said that she had a nice brother Well you pitch for him and I will for her ha ha haint that so tell Eunice that I intend to send her my likeness say mary you tell her I will send her my likeness if she will send hers to me tell her that I am agoing to get a furlough and come home just to see her Well I will quite about that Well mary you say that you
