Norfolk July 4th 62
Dear Mother
With pleasure I received your letter yesterday and was glad to hear from you I am well at present and I hope these few lines will find you the same the reason Danford did not write to his wife about the skirmish was because he thought it would worry her so he wont write to her about it So old houghton thought I lied tell him that he dont no every thing yet since I wrote before I have been to Yorktown and from there to Norfolk / I dont no rather you can read this or not I have got such a poor pen I have plenty of picket duty to do I dare not write you any thing about the war for it is forbidden I suppose you no that we are now at war with England We expect to be attacked before long by them
Dear mother I am glad you got the money I expect to get paid in 3 dayes I will send you 20 dollars and a long letter excuse this & good bye from your
