Portsmouth Va Oct 8th 1862
Dear Mother
With very much pleasure I received two letters from you yesterday and was very glad to hear that your health is good I am as well as usal you say that you have sent me five letters and haint received know answer I have answerd all of the letters and in one I sent my likeness I suppose you have got it before this time Don Houghton is sick so Don Comstock has got back I hope I will but it astonishing how our company dies off have you heard from Will lately I have not had a letter from him in a long time I hope this likeness all right mother I am pretty hard up for money and stamps as you know I have signed all my next payment to you it will be a check on a bank O I tell you I would like a piece of bread and butter I dont expect to get home this winter I may next spring if I life I am writeing by candle light I am on gard to morrow I am on gard every other day and night so you will excuse this short letter I will do better next time does rover stay with you yet how does martha / get along I will write you a long letter next time please receive this from your Affectionate son Charles C Kribs Co B 19 reg Wis Vol to his mother P Kribs
