Portsmouth Va Oct 14th 1862
Dear Mother
With much pleasure I received a letter from you yesterday and was glad to hear that your health is good I am as well as can be Dan Houghton is very sick he haint expected to live and I dont believe he will I am glad to hear that you received my likeness Mother it is just as natural a one as was ever taken I am very sorry to hear that Will gets along so poorly Iwish I could help him a little but I cant Lewis Giles and me is just as goodfriends again as ever was we get mad quick and over it quick Dear mother I have not touched a drop of licquor since I have been in the Army and I will never touch a drop either I shall follow your advice as long as I live how does Ann and Jo get along and ruth to how does grand father and mother get along does Mr Danils live in town yet give my best respects to them does rover stay with you yet have you made much butter this fall I wouldgive all I am worth if you have got any to spare if you will send me some by express I haint had / no butter since I left home mother the captain says that you can express some to me and it will follow me any where I go if we move if you Direct it to Charles C Kribs Co B 19th reg Wisconsin Vol Norfolk Va I wouldent mind carying a lot around but I would not have to carry it I could get the wagon would carry it for me I expect my pay every day I have signed it all to you I have not got your likeness yet I was glad to hear that you have got your carpet now if I should get my discharge this winter I am a going to make all of our folks a visit for it wont cost me any thing I shall go and see your folks in michigan and new york you know my pass I get home will take me any where mother I must say that I am pretty hard up for money but your family needs it to now mother if you will send me some buter and cheese by express I will be so thank full to you for it but dont rob your self all I have to eat is salt pork and bread no more at present please receive this from your Affectionate son Charles C Kribs
