Portsmouth Va Oct 28th 62
 
Dear Mother
                        With very much pleasure I just received a letter from you so I thought I would set down and answer it as I am off of gard to day. Don Houghton is very sick yet. I dont think he will live long so his wife is dead well that is to bad. O Dear mother how I would like to see you one of our boys in our Company got a box full of things from his mother it astonishing how the the soldiers die off down here. Dear mother I dont want you to rob the family by sending me money our gard duty is very hard We expect to take the field soon dont John Bright folks ever say any thing about me how does father get along I expect my pay every day I will get four months pay it will be fifty two dollars it will help you come this winter Uncle fred told you right about it you will get the money all [paper torn away] to come up to our /
 
aunt betsy see it and what did she think of it mother excuse this short letter for I am pretty tierd I will do better next time please receive this from your

            I was very glad to get a letter from you so old rose lays out does she that is to bad Well as you have to dig all the potatoes alone I will send you some money to spend Christmass I have pretty hard times down here one night I was on gard up to Fort Norfolk there was a lot of sesh prisinors there excuse this short letter I will do better next time
