Portsmouth Va December the 14th 1862
 
Dear Mother
                        With pleasure I received your letter yesterday and was glad to hear that your health is as good as usal I am well as can be expected I have received three newspapers from you this week We are haveing nice warm weather here now I haint seen any snow since last winter I think that I will be home by next spring the report is to day that Weldon and petersburg is taken if it is true they will soon have Richmond this warm climate effects my cross eye awfull bad it is geting pretty crooked there haint know signs of pay yet but it will be good when it comes if you can get hold of a spare postage stamp you may send me one you must excuse such bad writeing for I have got such a bad pen that I have to write it over twice
                                                                                                                       
I cant write much news this time lew giles is well dan Houghton is getting along first rate I am a fraid by what I have heard that the yellow fever is breaking out here I will write you a long letter next time this pen is so bad I will write to mary next time
