Newbern, N.C. April 5th, 1864
Dear Parents
With pleasure I received your letter to day I am sorry you have such a cold. I am as tough as old Febars ox was and can stand anything Sam Pewell and O. Batchelder is here they came last night tell little Willie it will be a good while before he sees Charlie for he has reenlisted for 3 years longer and he cant get home before. Mother I dont suppose you will like it but then you have got 2 sons with you now and you can afford to lose one cant you 3 years is not long when I get my pay I will send you about 50 or 60 / dollars I expect it every day Mother you can feel proud that you have got one son who can stand a soldiers hardships I dont expect you can read this for it is almost dark and I can not see tell W H I am agoing to have a southern gal ask him what he thinks of that
