Dear Mother
With pleasure I take my pen to answer your letter that I received some two weeks ago my health is not so very good since our march We marched over 100 miles right through the country from Richmond to Fredericksburg We did not even meet any guerilla band The march was a pretty severe one now the war is over & nothing to do & for my part I want to come home for I can sure that I have done my share. haint dont you think so I have received all that you sent me the paper envelopes P. stamps & lead pensil those I got before I left Richmond yesterday I received Marys papers & magizines there was one thing in the Beaver Dam paper whitch made me laugh it was / about Dave Goudeys poor Argus ha ha now if that haint good Ill give up so the poor cuss is married Well Ill be cursed if I can see how the poor critter happened to get a wife Bully for the Argus that & the Southern Confederacy is played out. When I was home on furlough a good many of the folks told me that I was agoing to get killed sure I wouldent take any notice of them but it used to worry me but now the war is over & I haint hurt yet all though I have had some pretty narrow escapes. I think I will be home for good within 2 months Well I am sure of it because the goverment wont keep us. you told me if there was any express office near me you would send me some fresh butter / I am sorry to say that the nearest express office to me now is over 60 miles. What is the reason that Grand Father Cramer dont write to me. now there is Aunt carrie she ought to write to me once in 4 years I should think when I come home I think I shall go & see Wm H & lottie that is if I have to go to Madison I shall come home first for I want to go to school next winter if I can if I should get home this summer I think I will go to work for some wheat buyer for you know I wont be able to help in a harvest field so soon. I am now on Provost Guard here in the city this is a hard looking place for allmost every house has been struck with a cannon ball

I was pretty hard up in Richmond for a spell as you are aware of I gave most all my hard tack to the poor whites & then had to go with out my self

as I want to write Mary a few lines I will close by hopeing this may find you well

From your affectionate
Son Charles C Kribs
