Charles C. Kribs to Phoebe Kribs and Paul W. Kribs, 26 May 1865
Fredericksburg Va May 26th 1865
Dear Mother
With pleasure I received your kind letter to day & now I will answer it I am very glad to hear your health is yet good I am pretty well this morning with the exception of a bad head ache you need not be alarmed about my enlisting in the regular Army if I haint satisfied with army liveing I never will be do you think I would be a soldier in times of peace not by a long shot I have given my country the best part of my life in war times so you need not worry about my going in the army again tell carrie she is a / d—d fool that is the best I can say for her. it is a raining like all possessed this morning & makes it quite uncomfortable. When you write Wm H again ask him why he dont write to me yes I hope to get home before long & then I shall declare war with the ducks for I long to get some. We had a very hard march from Richmond here but we are all right now we are quartered in houses in the city there is four of us has a room about 6 feet square & so we are very comfortable I can get all the cherries I want they sell them at 30cts a basket I can get all I want for nothing I wish you had a bout five bushell of them for they are so nice. When I get home I shall / have about 5 acres all set out in fruit trees. there is agoing to be a good many peaches & apples this summer so if I stay here I can get all the fruit I want I expect the first year after I get home will go pretty tough with me for cold weather does completely use me up. this city has been badly used up for their is not hardly a house but what has a cannon ball through it. but there is plenty of buissiness agoing on here even the citizens chicken coop is often visited by soldiers but Mother can you blame a soldier for doing so for they charge so much that the boys can not buy any there is know danger of any of the 19th Regt a going into the regular Army for our old Regt has stood the brunt of battle to often to want any more of it / that 3 dollars you sent to me I have not received yet & perhaps never will give my respects to all of my inquireing friends does Noyes live in Trempealeau yet as I want to write to paul & mary I will close hopeing to hear from you soon
your Affectionate son Charley
