Fredericksburg Va July 7th, 1865
Dear Mother
With pleasure I received your kind letter last night & will try & answer it now I am glad to hear that you are enjoying good health I am well as usal except a little dierhea whitch has been comeing on me for the last week We are haveing some very hot weather here now but then we are not exposed much to it as we would be if the war was agoing on Well I live in hopes of getting out of the service by September at the longest did you have any strawberries this year if you did put away a couple spoon fulls for me We are / haveing any quantity of apples now & nice ones to I wish you could get 1 or 2 barrells of them. they had an auction here the other day selling government mules they sold as low as 8 dollars Want that cheap they were all pretty good mules. Mother I dont believe I get all of your letters & in fact I know I dont I received two P Stamps from you in this letter I am yet driveing ambulance & that agrees with me first rate for I can get my regular nights rest & day time I am busy I might write to you nights & will if I can hook a piece of a candle. tell Grand Father that I think the Kribs family knows more than the rest or dave & me would of been killed sure ha ha / Well now to look at it we both have been very lucky but then Dave has never saw the fighting I have I have been where every bullet most took his man for instance look at this there was Fair Oaks & Proctors creek & Petersburg & Spring hill & deep bottom Ill take just these five battles & Ill bet Dave was never in such a fight as either one of these if he was taken prisinor Well I was in these five & 7 more & a good many skirmishes I can tell you the truth for 95 days our Regt was exposed to a terrible fire while the 36 was at lyeing in the pine woods away back to the rear just look at that dont you think the 19th had to do the worst fighting I dont / want to brag on my Regt but it is so Well know more at present
