Dear Mama
I write a few lines to inform you how I am, after passing through another battle our division had a severe fight with the enemy on the 27 Nov & drove them back some two miles after which we fell back beyond a small stream called Mine run & for- / tified during the night & waited for them, but they were afraid to attack us & commenced retreating to their old position beyond the Rapidan. they have gone into winter quarters I understand. our Regt lost 17 men in all, killed, missing & wounded. two of my men are missing May & Zimmerman & I think they are taken prisoners. Brow has arrived with my box of provision which was very exceptable. Lieut Kyle rejoined us soon after the fight. I think the campain is over for the winter. I shall put in for a furlough tomorrow as I wish to be at home Christmas. Wm has made application for one also. we are still in our old camp but expect to go up nearer / to Orange CH to winter as we are to far off to hall provisions, as the roads are yet very bad. I must close hopeing soon to see you all
