My Dear Sister:
Your letter of the 23rd ult. reached me on Monday & I should have answered it at once, but have neglected so doing until now.
Your letter found me doing very well with the exception of a severe cold, from the effects of which I have been suffering several days, but which is now a trifle better.
Cousin Alex Thomas reached here last friday from home and stayed with us until monday. He preached for us Sunday night. His sermon was very good.
We still have no patients in the "first", and of course our [?] are not overbooked at present.
We are having at this time cold, but agreeable weather, cloudy also, with a considerable sprinkling of rain.
Is Uncle Daniel as great a beau as ever, or has he quit his flirtation.
You must really excuse a short letter this time, as I have nothing at all worth writing about, unless I speak of the war or the girls, and as for the war, you can hear enough of it from other sources and as to the girls no words of mine will do justice to the subject, so I shall come to a full stop, by asking you to give my best regards to Mag & to any friends who may inquire after me, not forgetting my love to mother, Kate & yourself, and last but not least not leaving out of sight the fact that I wish to hear from you as often as convenient.
Your Affectionate Brother,
J. W. Smith
