"The Volunteer," William Rees Poem, undated
The Volunteer

Adieu to peace & all her charms
Our country calls to arms to arms
It bids us meet the rebble sons
Upon the plains of Washington

            Repeat

Its now our baner is unfurled
The pride the wonder of the world
What freeman thinks his home so dear
As not to be a volunteer

            Repeat

Adieu our mountain homes Adieu
Adieu our wives and sweet hearts too
Adieu to all we hold so dear
Our country bids us volunteer

            Repeat /

And when worn out with fatigue
We sink beneath a southern soil
Thoughts of home shall animate and cheer
each druping dying volunteer

            Repeat
