October the 2
Prayer of the
young Soldiers
Wife
ye powers of mercy hear my prayer
preserve my husbands life
Cast oer him thy protecting shield
in this unhallowed strife
oh guard him i the battle field
unscathed thro war's alarms
Bring him to his happy home
and his fond parents arms
But if it be thy will oh god
to take the life thou gave
then let him die where stripes and stars
Oer his head shall ever wave
if it be thy will in his countrys cause /
My husband should lose his life
if fatherless be his only child
Widowed his wretched wife
then let his name on historys page
be enrolled with the free
and the brave
let him nobly die a
heros death
And rest in a heros grave
This these few lines
were written by a
young wife to her husband
who had gone to the Wars
i hope that you will follow her example i was glad to hear that you were contented and the advise that you gave me to fight for my country which i shall remember when ill be in it
from your affectionate husband William /

And when worn out with fatigue and toil
i sink beneath a southern soil
thoughts of home shall animate and cheer
each drooping dying volunteer
repeat
i hope you will excuse the mistakes and poor writing it was to pass the time that i wrote these few lines the day being wet
When this you see
remember me
William Rees his hand

Adieu to peace and all her charms. Our country calls to Arms to arms.
It bids us meet the reble sons
Upon the plains of the Washington
repeat the tow last lines

The pride the wonder of the world
What freeman thinks his home so dear
as not to be a volunteer
repeat
Adieu to pea our mountain homes Adieu
Adieu our wives and sweet hearts too
Adieu to all we hold so dear
Our country bids us volunteer
