John Jacob Dewey
John Jacob Dewey was born around 1843 in New Jersey to Dunning and Caroline Dewey. His father was a farmer and wagon maker who owned $6,000 of real estate and $2,200 of personal property by 1870. He grew up and attended school in Palmyra, Pennsylvania. By 1857, the family was living in Goodhue, Minnesota.
 
In June 1864, he was drafted into the Union army. He mustered in as a private in Company E of the 3rd Minnesota Infantry. He mustered out on September 2, 1865.
 
After the war, he returned to his father’s household in Hay Creek, Minnesota. He married Mary Reed, and they had at least two children: Guy, born around 1881; and Lillian, born around 1888. By 1885, he was living in St. Paul, Minnesota. He applied for a federal pension in 1892 and eventually received one. He eventually moved to Chattanooga, Tennessee. He died in Thomasville, Georgia, on January 27, 1922.
