Dear Father
Aug. 23th 1862
Dear Father,
once more I take my pen in hand to write a few lines to you and let you know how I a geting a long my health is soem better than it has benn for the past month I have had a prety hard time of sickness since I have benn here and have not done any duty since I have benn in Camp Benton and I dont think I shal either I am not a going to take an oath one day and break it the next Father you always taught me to tel the truith and to scorn to tel a lie I have benn on the sick list ever since I came here and that is one reason why I have not stood Guard Pa you dont know how lonesom I was when I was down Sout it was a great deal harder than a hoeing corn or any thing else that I ever done at Hom for you know that I always want to do something for I hate idleness I hate above all things I seen some prety plantations down South but I would not give your Farm for all of them and be obliged to live there it is so hot /
you must get along with your work as wel
Pa dont you let enlist Creon enlist for I do not think he would stand it the weather is so hot and it is so unhealthy down in the swamps he would have the ague every day /
you must get a long with your work as well as you can and do not think it is hard if you had been where I have and see where the country is laid waste ther was nice large wheat field which had the fenses all tore and cattle and horses all over it I should like to hear how you are geting along at Home and to hear how much fall plowing you have got done, and I should like to know if the tame plumbs is ripe or not Pa I should like to know if the Meetings at Mr Smith are stil kep up and if you and Mother goes as you use to do I dont think that I shal write a gain until I get an answer from some of you Mother has not wrote to me since july and I have wrote to her three or 4 times I suppose you are very buisy and do not have much time to write while I have nothing to do Mother told me she dread the Battles but I do not near as much as I do the fevers and disseases that is in Camp pleas to excuse all mistakes and give my best respects to all inquiring Friend's
