my Dear Mother
it is with the greatest of pleasure that I take my pen in hand to write a few lines to let you know that I am well at present and hope that these few lines will find you the same Mother I suppose you go to prairmeeting and enjoy yourself very well and O how I wish I could be home and go with you Mother I mis the pr meetings the most of any thing I have not benn to meeting for over two months and I guess that is the longest time I ever went without going to meeting in my life I wrote this first when I was down in camp Macclernand and then I heard that wee could not send it and I thought I would finish it to day you dont know how glad I was to hear from you and the rest of the folks Mother I want you to write as often as you can for I ceartainly cannot write very often I went to meeting last Sunday / and I heard a very good sermon Mother if you knew how much I needed money you would not asked me to send you money I have not got any now onley one dollar and a quarter I never needed money more in my life than I do now hard crackers dont go very well all the time and it is not very safe to send money it is so far that I am a fraid it would not come to you Mother you must not think it strange if I do not oftne for I have so much to do that I have not time and wee cannot send the mail out very often and paper it is very carce Mother you must save me a peice of maple shogar wont you so that I can have it when I get back home if any one in the world is to be pitied it is soldiers wee have to march all day and then lay on the cold damp ground at night you must still be of good comfort and still trust in God for he has certainly benn preserving my life in the day of battle Mother rest asured that I try do as nigh wright as I can wee are now in the plac what they call pittsburgh landing and it is a very pleasent place water handy by I dont know that I have much more to write tell all the boy to write to me as often as they can I have benn washing to day and am quite tired I wash for the capt and Lieu and they pay me 5 cts a peice give my best respects to all inquiring Friends from your affectionate child to My beloved Mother
