Edward W. Stacy to Nathaniel Stacy, 11 September 1862
Leesboro Md Sept 11 1862

Dear Father
When I last wrote we were at Washington expecting to march for this place. We started from there last tuesday. When we started they told us it was 7 miles but before we got here it was 12. We started about ½ past five in the morning and got here about four P.M. The Colonel was very good to us for he let us rest every mile or two. Once he got off his horse and let one of the privates who was tired ride and took his gun and marched along with the rest of us. I stood the march very well I did / not have to fall out and after a day or two of rest I feel smart again. We do not know long we shall stay here. The Colonel has gone up to see Gen Burnside today and by tomorrow probably we shall know what we have got to do. We are under the command of Gen Burnside. I am glad of that. Every day troops are passing by us enroute for the scene of operations where Stonewall Jackson is. It is said that the papers contained an account of a fight that the 36th regt had in which we were all cut to pieces. If you have heard it do not give yourself any trouble about it for there is not a word / of truth in it, we have not so much as seen a secesher.

The weather is quite warm here now as warm as it is at home in summer though it is not so hot as to be uncomfortable.

The rest of the Harvard boys are all pretty well. In my last letter I did not tell you how to direct your letters to me for I did not know then but I will give it to you this time and I hope some of you will write soon and tell me all the news. I suppose you would like to know what I think of soldiers life. As I expected we have some hard times and some good ones but taking it all together I enjoy it very well / and am not sorry I enlisted. How do they come on with the nine months men have they drafted any in H. How do they get get along with the saw mill.

Remember me to all enquiring friends. With much love to you all I will now close

From your son
E. W. Stacy
