Edward W. Stacy to Lucy W. Stacy, 9 November 1862
1862 9th Nov
5 miles from Warrenton Va

Dear Mother

I received a letter the other day and found the 50 cts all safe. I wrote a letter to father the same day that I received yours. I told him I had not received a letter from home for some time. The reason is we have been on the move most of the time and our mail can hardly keep up with us. They are pushing us right along. We are now about 5 miles from Warrenton now. The ground we are now encamped on is close to the head waters of the Rappahannock. We have been here since night before last and expect to start again as soon as they get a road built for us on ahead. There are any quantity / of troops going with us. The talk has been that we are going to Gordonsville which I understand is about 90 miles from here. We have not got a sight at the rebels yet although we rather expected to have seen our first fight with them before now. We now begin think it is rather doubtful whether we ever see them.

We had quite a snow storm here day before yesterday. The weather here is as cold just now as it generally is in Massachusetts at this time of the year. I did not expect to see such cold weather out here but I presume this only a cold snap that will soon be over.

We have just heard of the election of Gov Andrew and of the election of Gov Seymour of New York. We have also heard that New Jersey has gone democratic / That is about all the news we have got from the world. We have gone so fast that we have kept out of the range of the papers. I have not received that paper you said you should send but I presume I shall get it the next mail we get.

Mr Wood has not come up with us yet. I have not heard anything from him since we left. The rest of the Harvard boys are all well including myself.

I do not know as I have anything more to write at this time. Please write how your health is now you have not written anything about it in your letters. To-day is sunday and we are to have divine service this afternoon so I must close

Good Bye

From your son E. W. Stacy.
