Edward W. Stacy to Mary Stacy, 8 February 1863
Washington D. C. Feb 8th 1863

Dear Sister

I received your letter of the 22nd of Feb but as I had written to you a home a day or two before I did not hurry about answering it. I am still at the Finley hospital and am getting along very well. The doctor has not said anything about sending me off yet. I went down to the city on the 4th. I went into the Capitol and into the senate chamber. I got there about an hour before the adjournment of Congress. The galleries were full and I could not get a very good seat / Neither could I hear very well. At precisely 12 oclock the senate adjourned. After the adjournment I went into the Representatives Hall. The House had adjourned also, so I did not have a chance to see them in session.

I looked the Capitol over pretty thoroughly and saw the paintings in the dome, representing the Landing of the Pilgrims, The Surrender of Cornwallis, &c. While I was looking around I happened to come across Mr Bradford. He with some of his wifes friends from Connecticut were looking over the Capitol. He invited me to go home with him but as I had got to be back to the Hospital at three / oclock I did not go. Mr Warner does not live with him. He said it was several squares off I am in hopes to go down again if I stay here much longer and go and see them. I did not have a great deal of time to look about the city as I did not get my pass till ten oclock and had to return at three.

The weather does not look much like spring here yet we have had a good deal of rainy weather.

I had a letter from Joseph Haskell last week. The regiment is at Newport News now.

But I believe I have about wrote out out as I do not feel much in a writing mood to-day. I am still gaining strength and getting along as well as I could expect. from your brother E. W. Stacy.
