Edward W. Stacy to Nathaniel Stacy, 19 August 1863
Near Nicholasville Ky Aug 19th 1863

Dear Father

We have at last got back into the heart of old Kentucky once more. Things look natural about here and it seems good to get where we can get good water and where somebody lives. We are now camped about 5 miles from Nicholasville on the turnpike that leads to Camp Dick Robinson. My last letter was written at Covington. We left there day before yesterday and arrived at this place yesterday. We came down on the cars. We expect to stop here a short time and get recruited up and then I suppose we shall go into East Tennessee with Gen Burnside.

The paymaster came round this morning and paid us two months pay up to the 1st of July. I procured a check for ten dollars on the City Bank of Worcester and send it to you in this letter. Our adjutant took the money and gave me the check and if this one should get lost he will give me another. I do not know that I have much more to write except that I am well I have received mothers letter of the 17th and Marys of the 22nd of July. I am glad to learn that your health and mothers is good and hope it will continue so. I forgot to write you that I had a sight at the city of Vicksburg. When we came down the Yazoo river we started to go down to Vicksburg after some forage for the horses we had aboard but we met a boat bringing it up to us but not till we got within / sight of the city.

I had a letter from John Whitney the other day. He was well but he tells me his father had had a shock of palsy so that he lost the use of one side I suppose Mary has gone to her school by this time I hope she will enjoy it much. With much love to you and mother I will now close.

From your son
E. W. Stacy.
