Edward W. Stacy to Lucy W. Stacy, 5 December 1863
Knoxville Tenn Dec 5th 1863.

Dear Mother

At last the siege of Knoxville is over and there is a chance to send a letter home once more and I hasten to write and let you know that I am well safe and sound. I cannot write as usual however that the Harvard boys are all well. Ephraim Houghton was wounded at the battle of Campbells Station in the calf of the leg. I have not heard from him for two or three days but at that time he was doing as well as could be expected. He cannot walk on it of course he is in one of the hospitals in this city. Joseph Haskell was slightly wounded in the face last sunday morning when the rebels made the assault on the fort. A shell struck near him and threw a limb of a tree in his face and barked his nose and gave him a headache for the rest of the day but he is well now. The last of the rebels left our front last night about midnight they have kept us pretty close for a few days but did not succeed in bagging us. Our orderly has just come from the hospital he / saw Corporal Houghton he is doing well. I cannot write more this time as the mail goes in a few moments. I feel that I ought to express my gratitude to God for having preserved me unharmed during the events of the past three weeks. I will write more as soon as I get time. Much love to father Mary and yourself. Good bye.

from your son,
in haste
E. W. Stacy.

P.S. I will put in a word for Mr Wood. he is out on picket and will not have a chance to write. he is well.
E. W. S.
