Mrs. Stacy

Dear Friend,
I received your kind and welcome letter a few days ago and was very happy to here from you & to here you all were alive and well. By the Providence of God I am still alive and well and hope this letter will find you all well. it is raining hard today and we dont have to drill we have to drill three times a day and a dress parade one squad drill one Co & a Regimental drill and a dress parade we are in camp about two miles from the city near fourt Lion and we / have a fine camp the boys are all well that are with the Co now

there has been sad changes in the Regt within a year or more. many of our brave and noble & Christian soldiers have fallen but I trust they are in the better land I miss them very much but I cannot wish them back again to suffer any more in this world. since I last wrote you we have made quite a move I surpose you read all about the fall of Richmond and Petersburg and the surrender of Gen Lee & all the rest of the victories we have gained with the help of God he has truly blessed our armies lately. we did not get into the fight before Petersburg but we was where we could see the whole of it. we had to stop in fourt Rice as Gen Parks made his head quarters there they fired the cannons from our fourt every once and in a little while but the rebs only got one morter to strike in our fourt and that did not hurt any / one the rebs left Petersburg on the night of the 2nd of Apr and the next day we marched through Petersburg and we guarded a wagon train of Provision up as far as Farmsville the distance about seventy five miles and then our Col was Provost Marshall of the place and we stay there till after Lee surrenderd about two weeks it was quite a place three churches and female seminary. there was two negroes where there was one white man. we left to come here from city point on the 27th and had a pleasant time coming here and we was onley two days coming & we have been here ever since and we do not know what they are going to do some say we shall be at home by July but we cannot tell what is going to be done I think that was quite a musing thing about those children picking up money by a doll show. I think every thing has been done for the soldiers that could be expected I am always glad to get a letter from anyone / that feels like writing to me I am very sorry Rev Dodge is going to leave Harvard I always liked him very much. there has been great changes in Harvard since I left home I here from Harvard as often as once a week from some one or other writes me I have not heard from home for more than a week it will seem good when we get where we can go to church and Sabbath School. we have preaching on the Sabbath by our Chaplain and we had a prayer meeting last sabbath eavning you asked if the work of grace was still going on in our Regt I think not since we left fourt Rice we have not had priviledges such as we would have liked and it has growed cold but I hope the work will soon commence again if we stay here and have opportunities to have meetings pray for us all that we may all be not onley be soldiers of our country but of our Blessed Saviors May the Lord Bless you all is my wish and prayer this from your friend
