Matthew T. Hendrick to Mary A. Adams, 14 August 1887
Lockart Aug. 14. 87.

Dear Mother
This being Sunday I thought I would write you a short letter. In Loupie letter to her sister I sent Miss May two [?] which I think will benefit her very much, knowing as I do the nature of her case.

I have found the Archibald McMullen heirs some of them live about thirty miles from here. What do you wish me to do in the matter? But you must first tell me what you have done. The reason I was so long finding them I was looking for McMillen when it is McMullen with two dots over the (ü) / making it sound like McMullen in English.

We have a good suit in the Catherine Arnold land and will file for suit some time this fall. As far as we have gone we have never been able to find any administration in that estate in neither Montgomery Grimes or Washington Counties. which will be greatly in our favor because we will alledge heirship by the deed to James and by parole evidence and thereby puting the defendants to the burden of proof to speed administration. And if we were to loose as heirs to Hendrick we would still win our prorata as heirs to Catharine Arnold. That is if defendants prove that the land was never Hendrick Arnolds in fee simple (in reality) but he controled it as the administrator of his Father's estate. now if they were to prove that, which I see no way / for them to prove it, then in the same suit one would get judgement for Hendrick Arnolds shair of Catharine estate because she could not have willed it becaus it was granted to her heirs after her death. But before we file for suit I wish to go to Castroville and see what I can find there we sent that Langen Hildebrand that was killed to Castroville for that purpose but he was killed before he did anything.

I have abandoned the Navisota suit for several reasons to numerous to mention here.

Loupie tells me that she will sell you her interest in the pasture on such terms as would perhaps suit you. She will take $2000 for the land one third this fall $600 to the loan company due in four years and bears 9% interest, the balance we will take a promisory note due at any time you say / bearing 10% interest but if it does suit you it is not for sail to any one else except those little pieces that is not fenced.

The R.R. will be here by the first sept. next. Lockhart is looking up. Crops are about as they were last year. Loupie's health has improved very much but she most generally has more or less periodical trouble. She expects to try to come to see you after the cars gets here. You must inform us as to the nearest Depot hackline &c.

Give our love to the girls and Henry
