Dear Alice,
I first scribble off a few lines to enclose in with the card, and I send with it a little thing for George. I could not get it in his box without doubling it up. I send in his box a piece of rope I thought it would please him as much as anything I could send. I have looked in a good many stores for something to send him & I could not find a thing. They have the most commonplace lot of things here I ever saw, but the / fact is the folks have not much money, & business is very poor. The stores do not compare with New York in the variety and taste displayed in selection of little articles.

Let Geo open his box himself. I put in a pair of compasses for measuring only, for Frank. I have a pair with pencil but I cant spare that. don't know if he uses these I send or not, if he does he is welcome to them. Pencils I thought would always come in handy & a box of pens for Mama. I hope you are all well, glad you & Frank like your new teachers. Hope you will have a pleasant birthday. the enclosed card was the best I could find in four stores. I got one of the men that one I wrote Mama about from Geneva to put your name on. Good bye, good wishes from    Papa.
