Bartly J. Dorsey was probably living in Tennessee by the early 1860s. In September 1861, he received a commission as a 1st lieutenant in Company D of the 10th Tennessee Infantry. The regiment took part in the Battle of Chickamauga and the Atlanta campaign. Union forces captured him at Fort Donelson in February 1862 and imprisoned him at Johnson’s Island in Ohio. According to his service records, he “is said to have escaped while some prisoners were being transferred to Camp Chase.”
He eventually rejoined his regiment, and he was promoted to captain in September 1863. He was wounded in September 1864. He remained in the army until at least December 1864, and he died sometime afterward.
