Julia A. Blackstone to Henry Dowst, 2 April 1865
Apr 2ond 1865
My Dear Brother
Yours came in due time and doubtless you think I do not appreciate your feelings by my long silence—but it is not so I have not had time to answer your letter till now My Husband has been confined to the house ever since the first of Jan. He has a bad cough and the Drs' say he cannot get well and I think myself he is gradually failling every day He is a man that has been trouble with the Asthma in his former life and when it left him, which is about 4 years ago, it left with a dry hacking cough
Henry I suppose you will a little when I tell you I have a little son he is six months old to day a smart fellow he is too / Hollis & Euphonia are greatly pleased with him (perhaps more so than his Mother) It has been a matter of some regret to me, my last marriage and if I did not believe that God over rules all things for the best of them who love him I should regret it more; the last year of my life has been one of severe trial yet my hope is so large that I will not give up to the disappointment of this life I hope it may be that your hope is ful and large, sufficient if possible to overcome all trials and disappointments to which you are subjected Henry I appreciate all your feelings and anticipate your wants in some degree and all I can say to you now is keep up good courage all will come right by degrees I trust I wish you would come and see us / how I would like to see you & yours come and see us as soon as you can Give my love to Grand Father & the children and write again soon I would like to write more but I cannot for want of time
Yours I am
Julia A Chapman
