Savannah Ga April 16/65
Now I will write a little in answer to the one just received this forenoon. It was written the 19th & 20th and directed to Galloups Island. It was rather old but it is better than nothing I tell you! I am well and the rest of the boys are all well. We dont have to do much duty to do now. and we have a pretty good time. We have been here 3 week next Tuesday and I wrote the next day and I hear that it did not start from here till two weeks after but I dont know how it is. If it did not go I guess you was uneasy about us.
We have good news here and if it is true I shall be pretty glad. We hear that Grant has got Lee and Johnson and their whole army.
the soldiers think that they shall get home in a month or two but I guess we shall not get home quite as soon as that. I should like to hear from home or from Selden & Lan about now.
April 17th 65 I got another letter from home last night and was glad to hear from you all. It was dated March 23d. I was glad to hear from Selden. I guess he was not in the Battle at Richmond you want to know about Seldens town bounty / He was expecting it when we was on the Island but he did not get it I dont think for one day when I was in his Barrack he said he was going to Head Quarters to get his town bounty and he went and did not get it that time but whether he got it at all or not I dont know he said if he did get it that he should keep it with him till he got a chance to send it home by some body.
There is not much going on here now it is rather still there is some bands of rebels round here now our negro pickets were driven in last saturday by the rebels or gurillas. /
What does Gamp think about the war now I should like to hear him talk about the war a war little while
I wish you could see just how things look out here this morning the birds are singing and every thing looks pleasant you ought to see the niggers and the mules that is all you can see here where we are now you ought to see Cuffy grin too when you say any thing to them about being free
If you could look into our tent this morning you would see us taking comfort we have got bunks to sleep in and a good chance for loafing &c
