It is letter day with us here to day so I must go to work. I got a letter from you Friday which was dated March 30th. and one from Lan the same day I wrote to him yesterday but I expect is he will be gone from the hospital before it gets there. his was directed to Galloups Island so it was about 20 days coming he said he got a letter from Selden a few days before he wrote and he was a little better.

We get along just the same as ever here in our hut have a good time and live high on bread and beaf rice and pork mackerell pickle vinegar &c &c. I am contented and like as well as ever and can eat twice as much as ever!

The good news that we get makes us feel pretty well. there was a salute fired here yesterday of one hundred guns and some speeches were delivered too. they talk pretty encourageing about the war now and think peace will be declared in a month or two. I hear that they have stopped enlisting and drafting and that is a pretty good sign I think if it is so

Noah Hoyt & Anthony Little are out on picket today and I suppose I shall have to go tomorrow. the other Vienna boys have been out once. it is not bad going on picket here now.

The blackberries are getting ripe out here now and the boys that go on picket get as many as they want.

There is a Cristian Commission here in this place but I have not been / down yet Fred & Henry Whittier went down the other day and got some writing paper and envelopes some newspapers a Testament and so on I must go down and get me some as it is free and I am some short of change now

If you have aplenty of change when you write I wish you would put a little. perhaps you will think I have spent my money fast but I have not. I have not spent any for anything that I did not need I have lent some considerable to the boys from Vienna and bought a knapsack that cost $5.00 which was a big price but every other man in the Co bought one and so I did and it has almost paid for itself now I hate to send for money as quick this but I want to buy a little / milk or some such a thing once in a while

how is Gamp and what does he think about the war now and what do you think about &c &c do you think we shall get home before our time is up

Wills is in hospital now and is going to be sent north in a few days. he will go to Washington or Philadelphia I guess. I have heard that he is going to have his discharge but I dont know how it is I guess he will get home in a month or so either on furlough or have his discharge I dont know what the matter is with him he looks as well as ever he did and can eat as much as any body and can walk from the hospital up here and back which is about a mile. (I guess he is as home sick as any thing.) cant think of any more now write soon Yours &c
