Friend Alanson
I rec'd your letter of 25th ult in due season and was happy to hear from you and to hear that you were well &c So I thought I would write you a few lines this afternoon to let you know how we get along out here My health is firstrate has been all the time pretty much I have only lost one day's duty yet we came to this ground 7 months ago yesterday and have been in camp ever since excep three days that we were going and coming from Sharpsburg last fall we stopped up there five weeks then came to Harpers Ferry stopped there / until the seventh of April when we came here 2 miles from the Ferry our camp is now situated on a dry pleasant spot where we find as much enjoyment as any squa company of soldiers that ever left the State of Maine I guess
As we are now situated I feel very well contented but it is not so pleasant as it would be at home notwithstanding we have but very little to do we have ben drilling since we came up here I like it pretty well my post is as gunner so if we ever go into action again I shall have chance to fire at the rebs myself I like the Artilery much better I should Infantry for it is as much easier as you can think almost I would not join Infantry if I could help it
We have been having a big rain storm it has rained two days / and is raining yet but we are well provided for so that we dont mind it much all I think of is its delaying Gen. Hookers army which I suppose was just beginning to move a little. We rec'd some good news from Vicksburg the other day I am looking for that to fall every day now as is most every one I suppose
Gust M is sick has been sick for the past ten days I dont know what ailes him he gets no better and they are agoing to send him to the hospital at Harpers Ferry in a day or two I believe he will be so near that I can go and see him real often and I shall not fail to do so and do for him what I can and that is not much after all So you say uncle Simons boy got lost did he indeed that is bad to get lost so near / home dont you think so I suppose riding with the gals had such an effect as to bewilder him but never mind he'll outgrow it in time you must look out and not get taken that way I have nothing of importance this time I will write more next time my respects to all write soon
Truly Yours
