Post Hospital City Point. Va
March 18th 1865
Father
I will try and pen you a few lines thinking you would like to hear from me. We arrived here the 15th had a hard passag of five days the particulars I will write some other time. I was taken with the measles one day out from Galloupes Island and have had a hard show since then. I am getting along pretty well and shall get smart again if nothing happens This is the sixth day that I have been "broke out" I can sit up three hours at a time my appetite is not very good. The food is principally / corn starch, rice & beef tea
It is very windy and quite cool here. The hospital here is nothing but cloth tents and lets in a good deal of wind My eyes trouble me a good deal but are better than they were when I came here. I shall have to stop here three or four weeks I expect
I will write to you again in a few days and write a longer If you could see me you would not think I could write a long letter this time
Write as soon as you get this
