Silas R. Kidder to Henry Dowst, 1 May 1865
City Point Va
May 1st 1865
Mr Dowst dear Sir
I rec'd a line from you last evening asking information regarding Selden. I did not see him while he was here but several of the boys did. He was much better at last advices and had so far recovered as to be able to go away, and has been sent to Wash. He had not regained his wanted weight and strength sufficiently to endure the hardships and exposure of camp or campaign life. Present appearances indicate a speedy and permanent termination of such duties to us all. The / war is literally ended and peace is about to make its advent in our once prospering but now chastened land. The boys are all sanguinely looking for their release from the necessarily rigorous confinement and that too at no distant day. The general health of this organization is excellent indeed
Sending my best wishes for your welfare &c I remain most Respect your Obdt Servt
